Language of today will be a computer language, says a leading computer scientist.
The world’s languages will become more computerized, says John von Neumann, a computer scientist at the University of Cambridge, who is the author of the forthcoming book, Language of Tomorrow.
“We are going to have language in computers, and in computers language is going have a meaning,” he said in an interview.
The goal is to allow people to communicate more directly with one another, he said.
“There is a lot of hope that language is the next step in that process.”
The book, to be published in June, explores the prospects of using computers to create language, or language from the inside out.
“Language of the Future” is a first for a computer-based book.
Computer language is a way of saying, “yes, I know this,” said von Neumans, who teaches a course on the intersection of language and computer science at Cambridge.
It’s not just the meaning, but the way you put it.
It’s an important step toward creating a new language, but it’s not the only step, he added.
“There’s an obvious question of how you do it, but there’s also a lot about the process that has to be done,” he added, noting that some computer scientists are working on this as well.
Von Neumann said he thinks computer languages will eventually evolve into a formal language, which will be used for communicating with computers, but he doesn’t see it happening anytime soon.
He said that language could become the most ubiquitous tool in the world.
“You’ll probably find it in cars, or in restaurants, in the sky, on the street,” he told The Wall St Journal.
People will eventually communicate more in more languages.
But there are big obstacles to the technology.
There are only so many ways you can talk to a person, and there are many different ways to tell a person what to do, he noted.
For example, if you want to say something to a child, you can’t just say, ‘Hey, do you want something to eat?’
“He said there is also a difference between being able to say, “What is your name?” and “Can you get me something to drink?
“He said he’s looking into ways to help people learn to use these languages.”
I think that’s really a challenge that’s going to come up,” he continued.
Language of Tomorrow is due out in March 2020.
